Fasting Day 16 of 40: Creation

As a young boy I asked my mother about “the beginning.” It was a line of what came before that, and what came before that, until of course we inevitably came to the answer of God and infinity. Her advice at the time was “don’t think about it too much, it will make your head hurt.” I ignored the suggestion and perhaps that is the reason for headaches over the years. I have always been fascinated by the idea of there being a nothingness, and then something. How does something come from nothing? In truth this is the first miracle that we all acknowledge and keep on going. Our theories of the Big Bang, or of God, all require us to accept this fact: from nothing comes something.

Despite its seeming impossibility, we all experience this within ourselves. There is a divine spark that yearns to infuse our reality with more light. We do this in every form imaginable, from wood furniture, to computer code, to blogs. Each one is a unique expression of our truest selves, taking form in a new way. In a very true and real way, what we create is an extension of us. It is like neural pathways spreading and joining in novel places within a fetus. Each branch is being infused with more matter and soon there are bones, hands, and skin. The shape and form of the creation take their time and an aspect of perfection is born.

The beauty in it is that there are no wrong steps. In song writing I have found a tune I liked as I am creating, only to find out it is a Beatles’ song. I knew it was too good to be true. I imagine most songwriters in the 21st century have rewritten a Beatles song by accident. They were really tuned in. BUT we cannot stop there. There were and always are elements that are novel and can be adjusted to fit our original intention. As you go, you will of course find paths that others have blazed, and in your authenticity you desire to forge your own path, to write your own song. Follow the spark that led you there and see how the tune diverges. Many creations have an element of sameness with another until they are given more of our unique perspective and energy.

Inspiration is that fire that keeps us moving in our creating. It is passion burning within us, asking to move that work of art on through. These whisperings from the muse should not be taken lightly. They are songs from our soul bubbling up to offer fulfillment and delight for us and others. And what triumph we feel when we continue the path of our heart and continue our works despite any fears or doubts. The Love we have for our makings is what encourages us to move through adversity. Each step of the way, our inspiration grows and guides us further still.

Our inner voice is the call of light moving through the void. It is creation for creation’s sake. It is an acknowledgement of the fact that we exist for no other reason than to exist. We get to be here because we are here. It is a wonderfully silly place we find ourselves in and makes about as much sense as something coming from nothing.

All the Love,

Ryan Orion

Fasting Notes:

Clothes are beginning to drape from me. I feel like a hangar for many of my shirts and pants now.

In terms of temptation the past few days have been a great opportunity to practice my NO. There is food and offerings all around me and everyone here is so kind, they are frequently bringing in new snacks. As I detach more, the easier it is to see how funny it all is.

I am hosting an online event this next Thursday to cover some more of my experience and answer questions. Feel free to join!
